Local SEO basics for tradespeople

The three things that actually move the needle when neighbors search for a plumber, electrician, or contractor near them.

Local SEO

When someone needs a plumber at 7pm on a Tuesday, they don’t open a magazine. They type “plumber near me” into Google and call one of the first three results. If you’re not in that little map box, you’re not in the running — no matter how good you are.

Here’s the good news: for most local trades, getting found is not complicated. It comes down to three things, done consistently.

1. Your Google Business Profile is the whole game

Before anyone visits your website, they see your Google Business Profile — the card with your name, star rating, hours, and photos. It’s free, and it’s the single highest-leverage thing you own.

Fill in every field. Pick the right categories. Add real photos of your work every month. Answer every review, good or bad, within a couple of days. Businesses that do this consistently show up higher and get more calls — full stop.

Google wants to show results that match the search. If people search “water heater repair in Springfield” and your site never says those words, you’re invisible for that search.

You don’t need to stuff keywords. You need clear pages that name what you do and where you do it: a page per core service, and genuine local detail about the areas you serve.

3. Reviews are your reputation and your ranking

Reviews do two jobs at once: they convince the human reading them, and they tell Google you’re active and trusted. The businesses that win aren’t the ones with a hundred old reviews — they’re the ones getting a steady trickle of new ones.

The trick is simply asking. A quick text after the job — “Thanks again. If you have a second, a quick review really helps us” — works far better than hoping people remember.

All three of these take consistent effort every month, which is exactly the time you don’t have. That’s the job we do: your profile managed, your pages built to be found, and review requests sent automatically after every job.
